Igoumenitsa (Mainland)
Igoumenitsa, in the north of the island in the gulf that faces Corfu, is in a lovely setting because of the sea and the pine slopes behind. There is a road hugging the coastline so it is easy to explore. The island was liberated during the First Balkan War in 1913 when the city was little more than a tiny fishing village, home to 500 people. It was destroyed in World War II so what you see today is the rebuilt settlement.
